Mold is a fungal growth that forms and spreads on various types of damp or decaying organic matter. The coloured appearance of mold is caused by the formation of spores containing fungal secondary metabolites. These molds each contain several individual subspecies that can produce mycotoxins that can be very harmful to both humans and animals. These flu-like symptoms can include headaches, nausea, diarrhea, allergic reactions, respiratory problems and even death.
The two most common types of hazardous molds that are found indoors are Aspergillus and Stachybotrys (commonly referred to as Black Mold). They are known to have a greenish and/or black colouring and normally form on a material that has a high cellulose content, many of which are commonly used in construction materials. Some examples of these commonly used materials are drywall, wood sheeting, attic trusses, fibreboard, paper, wood subfloor/wood substrate and insulation.

Mold Spore Testing
Mold spore testing is a process used to determine the presence of mold in a particular area. This testing is typically done by collecting samples from the environment and analyzing them for the presence of mold spores. The results of the testing can help identify the type and amount of mold that is present in the space. Air sampling is the most common method that is used and it involves collecting air samples in various locations within a house or building to determine the concentration of mold spores in the air. Mold spore testing can be a useful method when trying to assess the extent of the mold problem and help guide remediation efforts. It is important to hire a certified mold inspector or professional to conduct the testing and interpret the results accurately.
Mold Removal
The process of removing and cleaning up obvious mold growth in a house, building or structure. Once identifying and addressing the source of the mold, it is important to contain the affected area to prevent further spread throughout your home. It is crucial to remove any mold from indoor spaces to improve air quality and prevent health issues associated with mold exposure. A containment may be required to set up around the affected area while installing air scrubbing machines to help clean the air while the remediation is in process.

Attic Mold Remediation
Before
After
Because of the consistent moisture and dampness that permeates in the air on Vancouver Island, mold may be present in any area throughout your home but is most commonly seen in the attic. There are several variables that can contribute to mold growth in your attic with the most frequent factors being the condition of the roof and the ventilation throughout the space. Once moisture is trapped inside your attic, the area usually lacks proper ventilation to help the moisture dissipate. Once this happens, mold spores will begin to form on the roof sheeting and attic trusses which will then spread quickly to other parts of the wood structuring.
There are a few methods that can be used when treating mold in your attic but the first and most important step is having a professional inspect the space to determine which type of action is best. The type of remediation will depend on the overall condition of the attic and the square footage of the space. Hazcare Solutions has years of experience in removing this hazardous substance so if you suspect that mold may be present in your home do not hesitate to call or email today to book your free estimate.
